The Prime Minister has nominated Samson Mekonnen (PhD), vice president for strategic communication and internationalization at Addis Ababa University, for the top job at the Ethiopian Broadcast Authority.

Lawmakers are expected to vote on the nomination during a parliamentary session tomorrow.

If approved, Samson will fill the empty seat left behind Mohammed Idris, who was appointed Minister of Peace a few weeks ago.

Samson assumes his new position as the Authority began pushing for controversial amendments to the Media Proclamation.

Critics view the proposed amendments, which include sweeping changes to the structure of the Authority as well as restrictions on live broadcasts, as a threat to press freedom.

Samson, 32, earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Addis Ababa University before completing a postgraduate program in communications at the University of South Africa. He is also a member of the steering committee for a universities association under BRICS.
