Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed today urged a “win-win” approach to resolve the boundary dispute between the Amhara and Tigray regions peacefully.
Addressing questions from lawmakers in parliament, Abiy advised that “other options are not good.”
The disputed areas of Wolkayit and Humera were formerly administered by Tigray before the conflict in northern Ethiopia erupted last year.
Both Amharas and Tigrayans claim the territories as their own.
“There is no reason to fight for land,” Abiy was quoted as saying.
The PM’s call for a win-win solution comes as many observers warn that the border dispute risks fueling renewed conflict in northern Ethiopia if not managed carefully.
