Vision of Emperor Haile Selassie I: The airline was established under the guidance of His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, King of Kings, Elect of God. His vision was to modernize Ethiopia and create a national airline that would connect the country to the rest of the world.

Collaboration with TWA: Ethiopian Airlines was founded in collaboration with Trans World Airlines (TWA), an American airline that played a crucial role in its early development. TWA provided technical expertise and management support, helping to lay the foundation for the airline’s future success.

First Aircraft: The airline’s inaugural flight took place on April 8, 1946, using a Douglas C-47 Skytrain aircraft. This aircraft, a military transport plane adapted for civilian use, marked the beginning of Ethiopian Airlines’ journey in the aviation industry.

Context and Comparison: For context, Delta Air Lines, the oldest airline in the world, was founded on March 2, 1925. With nearly 100 years of history, Delta has set a benchmark in the aviation industry, and Ethiopian Airlines’ inclusion in the list of the 15 oldest airlines in the world is a testament to its enduring legacy and success.

Ethiopian Airlines’ journey from its inception to becoming Africa’s largest and most successful airline is a story of visionary leadership, strategic partnerships, and the dedication of its employees.
