The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) has pushed back the deadline for the registration of candidates to February 22 at the behest of political parties.
The registration process began a month ago and was originally scheduled to end on February 7, but election officials have opted to extend the deadline by two weeks at the request of political parties, according to an NEBE statement.
“They [parties and candidates] stated they cannot finalize registration within the timeframe. They requested NEBE to extend the deadline and the Board has decided to do so,” reads the statement.
The seventh national election is slated to take place on June 1.
