EEU registered 63bln Birr in revenue in 2024/25
The state-owned Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) registered 45.4 billion Birr in revenue from energy sales in 2024/25, up 50 percent from the previous year.
Total revenue shot up 48.6 percent to 63 billion Birr, and EEU executives want to use the sizable growth as a springboard for their long-term ambitions. They want to see the utility firm generate 101 billion Birr in revenue this year, including 75 billion Birr from energy sales.
EEU is working on a roadmap to chart the next 25 years of its journey, designed to supersede the ‘distribution system expansion and improvement master plan’ it currently uses.
The EEU reports it lost 2.3 billion Birr to theft and energy waste, while 147 of its employees have been found guilty of crimes related to theft.
Energy demand has grown by 18.2 percent this year, according to EEU, which has seen its client base grow to 5.21 million including the residents of 55 kebeles covered by off-grid power schemes.
EEU purchases power from Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) and sells it to consumers.
According to Getu Geremew, chief executive of EEU, the company does not have any EEP payables on its books. However, an EEU audit report published in January 2025 indicated EEU’s net debt stood at 32 billion Birr, up from 19 billion Birr the year before.
in 2024, EEU registered 3.7 billion birr in profit, while ep registered a 10 billion birr Loss.
The gradual lifting of power subsidies as part of Ethiopia’s agreement with the IMF likely contributed significantly to EEU’s revenue growth.
