An Ethiopian Airlines purchase order for 67 commercial aircraft with US manufacturing giant Boeing goes down as the largest ever one-time order by an African carrier.

The state carrier is prepared to shell out for Twenty 737-Max aircraft, as well as eleven 787 Dreamliners. The order includes a further 36 unspecified aircraft.

ET executives signed the deal with their counterparts at Boeing during the Dubai Airshow, which takes place between November 13 and 17, 2023. They expect the aircraft to join the Ethiopian fleet over the coming years.

“Investments on the aircrafts will be determined based on the prices at the time the aircrafts will be delivered. The payments will be made as the orders are delivered. We have now only placed the orders,” said a source at ET’s headquarters in Addis Ababa.

The airline operates a fleet of 147 aircraft and the arrival of the new planes would see the fleet size grow by half.

The new orders include new breeds modified to reduce emission and noise footprints, according to Boeing. The manufacturer and Ethiopian Airlines have also agreed to work together to provide cabin modification services for the carrier’s operational 787 Dreamliners.
