Chasing closely behind was Ethiopia’s Leul Gebreselassie. He clung to second position for most of the race and appeared poised to take silver.
However, Israel’s Mahru Teferi had other plans, surging past Leul in the final 200 meters to claim second place with a time of 2:09:12.
Leul crossed the line just seven seconds later in 2:09:19, denying him the silver but earning Ethiopia a hard fought bronze.
