Eighteen people have been reported killed by gunmen allegedly linked to the Oromo Liberation Army (OLF-Shene) in Kamashi Zone, Benishangul-Gumuz. Eyewitnesses say the gunmen attacked Mizhga locality on the morning of Wednesday, May 21, with a dozen other victims sustaining heavy injuries.
Nobody has yet claimed responsibility for the attack but locals who spoke to The Reporter strongly suspect the involvement of OLF-Shene. Many have fled the area for safety.
The attackers reportedly set off from an area straddling the border between Oromia and Benishangul-Gumuz, from a locality known as Cementtegna Kebeleaccording to local residents.
Fears the attackers may still be nearby has local militia and other security personnel on high alert, while farmers, who make up most of the local population, are reluctant to return to work, a resident told The Reporter.
Wednesday’s attack claimed the lives of nine male and nine female victims, according to eyewitness accounts.

Residents have called for adequate medical attention for those injured by the gunmen, and urged the government to act to prevent future attacks.
A senior official in the local administration told The Reporter he was instructed by his superiors not to divulge information about the attack.
The Reporter’s attempts to contact the regional peace and security bureau were unsuccessful.
