A Chicago-based law firm representing the families of the victims of the 2019 Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 Max crash is pushing for up to USD 58 billion in compensation from the aviation giant following what it calls a “grossly inadequate” plea agreement with the US Justice Department.
Ribbeck Law Chartered has filed a plea submission at a US District Court contesting a deal with the Justice Department that would see Boeing plead guilty to criminal fraud conspiracy charge and pay between USD 244 and 487 million in fines for the negligence that caused the plane crash in March 2019.
The firm is seeking the dismissal of the plea deal and up to USD 58 billion in compensation, arguing the amount would be more “consistent with fines paid by other corporate criminal defendants who have engaged in extreme criminal conduct,” according to a statement released today.
Issues with the 737 Max arising from corner-cutting and oversight in Boeing’s manufacturing process led to the Ethiopian Airlines crash, which killed all 149 people on board shortly after takeoff from Bole International Airport.
