The Ethiopian government is taking steps to strengthen security measures related to imported information technology products through a new draft proclamation approved by the Council of Ministers today.

The draft proclamation, which still needs approval from parliament, aims to curb potential security threats posed by imported IT products like computers, phones, networking equipment, and software.

According to a government statement released on July 17, 2023, the new draft proclamation is necessary “to address the adverse impact some imported IT products can have on national security.”

If approved by parliament, the proclamation would give regulatory bodies the authority to inspect imported IT products for security risks and determine which products should be allowed into the country.

The scope and specific requirements set out in the proclamation have not yet been publicly released. Ethiopian lawmakers will now review the draft before deciding whether to enact the new import regulation into law.
