The quadralite comprising Egypt, USA, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE have pledged to contribute more than USD 1.5 billion towards humanitarian efforts in Sudan, where a brutal war has been raging for nearly three years.

The quad announced its intentions to secure an elusive humanitarian truce, and pledged a rapid scale-up of humanitarian assistance across Sudan. Reports indicate that close to 14 million people have been uprooted by violence since the conflict began in April 2023.

Several attempts to negotiate a truce between Sudan’s warring parties have failed over the past three years, but US special envoy for Africa, Massad Boulos, says Washington is pushing for a peace deal before the start of Ramadan in two weeks’ time.

The AU and the EU are also engaged in similar fundraising and mediation efforts, which were on the agenda during the German foreign minister’s visit to Addis Ababa last week.
