The Federal High Court has ordered an injunction on a decision by the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) to suspend regional elections in five districts disputed by the Tigray and Amhara regions.

Earlier this week, the Board announced that residents of Humera, Adiremets, Korem Afla, Telemt, and Alamata (areas previously under the jurisdiction of Tigray) will only vote for their federal representatives when the country goes to the polls in June.

Election officials say they have suspended regional council elections until territorial dispute are resolved, based on a decision from the House of Federation.

The announcement drew fire from political parties in Tigray, including TPLF and Simret.

The latter, led by former Tigray president Getachew Reda, appealed the decision to the federal high court, whose judges ordered an injunction today.

The Board and Simret will appear in court on March 4, 2026.
