The central committee of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has announced the revocation of party membership for veteran members Keria Ibrahim and Mulu Gebregziabher as well as their expulsion from the central committee.

The party cited the divulging of sensitive information to adversaries as the reason behind the expulsion, which came during a conference under the theme ‘Commemoration of Yekatit 11 to renew the promise of martyrs.’

The TPLF announced the decision via its official Facebook page on February 22, 2024. It said the decision underscores its commitment to upholding its principles and safeguarding its interests.

The central committee reportedly made the decision following an assessment of the issue of members who were detained by the federal government during the two-year war in the Ethiopian north.

The two former party members used to hold dual roles as councilors and party affiliates. Keria notably served as Speaker of the House of Federation for close to two years before her resignation in June 2020. Mulu was previously a state minister for Transport.

The two have expressed remorse, conveyed deep regret, and pledged to contribute to their community’s welfare through alternative avenues following the expulsion.

Both Keria and Mulu were taken into custody amid the war, as federal forces entered Mekelle. Subsequently, their release from prison occurred after the signing of the Cessation of Hostilities agreement in Pretoria, South Africa.

Keria had agreed to testify as a prosecution witness against the TPLF during the war.

The TPLF Central Committee has also confirmed that Addisalem Balema (PhD) and Abraham Tekeste (PhD) will continue to serve as members of the Executive Committee. Solomon Kidane (PhD), Atsbeha Aregawi (Col.), Kiros Hagos, and Radae Berhe (Col./PhD) were also approved to continue serving on the Central Committee.

The party has appointed Fitlework Gebregziabher, Isaias Tadesse (Col.), and Almaz Gebretsadiq as the organizing committee members for its upcoming 14th party congress. The central committee, along with the security commission, convened a joint forum on February 23, 2024, to decide on the agenda and scheduling of the conference.
