The Ethiopian contingent left a strong impression at the ongoing World Road Running Championships in Riga, with an Ethiopian sweep in both the men’s and women’s competitions.
In the men’s 5km race, Hagos Gebrehiwot claimed victory for Ethiopia, taking the tape in a new course record time of 12:59. Right behind him in second was fellow Ethiopian Yomif Kejelicha, who clocked an impressive 13:02. The nail-biting battle between the two Ethiopians added excitement to the event.
Meanwhile, in the women’s road mile, Diribe Welteji stunned onlookers with a scorching world record run of 4:21.00. Securing second was another Ethiopian, Freweyni Hailu. Diribe’s mark is subject to ratification, but it served notice of her immense talent.
